The Ongoing Google Chrome Crashes - Update: Video added that may be possible solution
Since I began using Windows 7 64-bit I have been experiencing issues with Google Chrome crashing. Everything suddenly locks up, freezes my laptop, and sometimes even requires a cold restart, which is not good for any computer. That would be hitting the power button to force a shut down, as the computer will not respond due to the Chrome issue locking up the entire machine.
I have researched this extensively and visited well over 40 forum complaints on the Google forum site. All unresolved. This goes back since the introduction of Windows 7. The problem continues and can be viewed by just doing a Google search for related issues.
Of course Google folks want you to report the error messages to the forums, which I have done, and they have never been remedied so far.
In Chrome Version 11 and above, you can view your recent crash history by going to chrome://crashes in your browser, which will show the crashes with a Crash ID number, date and time of occurrence, and the link to click to "File bug". You can view my Chrome crashes from today, 01/20/2011, in the photo above. (I have attempted to put it here in this post, but keep getting error messages.)
You may get a screen saying that "Crash reporting is disabled." If that is the case, you will need to enable crash reporting by going into Options under the "wrench" in the upper right, click the Under the Hood tab, and check "Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google."
You will notice that there are two different ID numbers. When I went to the forums, there are dozens of different ID numbers listed from various people.
In the Google forums, the responses are such as "we are aware of the problem....", "we are attempting resolution...", etc. Some of the resolutions are so complicated, even I, with CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+ certifications, cannot follow. I could link to some of the forums here, but I think that you would do best simply searching on your own to see the great number of posts in regards to this issue and how LARGE the issue actually is.
There appears to be no ongoing effort to actually resolve this issue in regards to Google taking action. It is more like a shrug... and live with it thing with them. This is my conclusion after reading so many "older" complaints about the same issue in other versions of Chrome. I use the most current Chrome Browser, Version 16.0.912.75 m.
With no resolution in sight, and no promise from Google that one may happen, one is left to revert to another browser they previously used before Chrome, or seek a new browser to use. This is a shame when you consider how things are linked to the Chrome browser. I am automatically allowed to hop around Google Land without having to sign in all over the place, such as Gmail, Google+, Adsense, Webmaster Tools, Google Analytics, and more. But currently, I am one of those who is considering leaving Chrome for good.
Update 01/30/2012: I have done as instructed in the newly added video below to see if this works. I wanted to share this simple possible solution with others as soon as I found it. I will update this further as to the crashes ceasing or continuing.
Update 02/05/2012: Since doing the above referenced steps in my previous update Google Chrome has not crashed again. It appears that the video below offers the solution to the problem experienced.
Update 02/10/2012: Eleven days now, and no Chrome crashes. It seems like the solution is a fix. Will post a gain in a week or two and update again. I am online approximately 10 hours a day in Chrome and not more problems.
Update 02/24/2012: It has now been approximately 4 weeks sense I have implemented this solution and still no further issues with the Chrome crashes due to the Flash issue.
Update 03/11/2012: As above, still no further issues after applying this shared solution to the problem!
Update 05/01/2012: Over the past several days a new problem has surfaced with Google Chrome and Windows 7. When going to Facebook or another site and trying to upload photos, Chrome is crashing. Same machine, same browser and same operating system. This crash happens as soon as I click "browse" on the uploader and my files open to select. Bang....crash city. I have yet to resolve this issue and shall try to see what I can work out on it and share.

How To: Fix Adobe Flash Crashes in Google Chrome

Hello Melissa! Thanks for stopping by, reading and commenting. Glad to hear that you are not having any problems with Chrome and your O/S. As for my system, well, it is in excellent shape as I am an IT person. :) I am sure there are many like you that have no problems, but for some reason, as described in the hub, there are literally 100's if not 1000's who are having the same or similar issues such as myself. I love Chrome myself. The crashes are not daily, or even weekly, however, when they do happen, they will happen for several days or a week.
The last few weeks Chrome has been crashing on me at least once a day. I'm not sure why. I've been using Windows 7 since 2010 and Chrome for almost a year. Was there recently an update that I missed?
Hello ChasingAutumn! I am not aware of any recent updates on Google Chrome. I know I have not updated recently. I am not sure what is causing it as I mentioned in the hub, and apparently, it is a mystery to most including Google. I know it is not a good thing to have it crash in the middle of doing something. A new thing has come up recently. When I log into my online bank account, I can log in and such, but when it gets to the account view, a blank page. I open it in Firefox and see things just fine. Used to work in Google Chrome just fine as well. I checked to see if it was Flash Player and Adobe gives me the message that Chrome has Flash installed and will update automatically. Go figure.
Thanks for stopping by, reading and commenting. I hope you find some resolution for your issue soon. If so, please do pop back in and share it us. :)
I have had this happen may times to me on my main Laptop, as did my friend. I went through all the stages and fourms, and it was just a bunch of the same answers and check this site and that problem. When I got my notebook I decided against installing this program, and I really don't feel like I am missing out on anything.Well more than that happened , and all the details are not worth talking about, because we all know the problems with Google Crome.
Hello Lucybell! I see that I am not alone here on HP with persons who have had the same problems as myself. I am at that point, of simply uninstalling Chrome. I may miss it at first, but I think I will get over it! Thanks for stopping by, reading and commenting.
Once I had tried to use chrome, but it crashed so often that I began using safari. Thanks for sharing useful and informative article.
Hello Vinaya! I have Safari, Palemoon, Firefox, Cometbird, IE, Chrome, and Opera on my machine. As stated, I like what Chrome offers, but for the best at not crashing, well I would have to use Firefox along with Palemoon and Cometbird which are implemented on the Firefox platform.
Thanks for stopping by, reading and commenting. :)
My new system has Windows 7 64-bit and I use Chrome daily. Never faced any crashing issues till date. Thanks for the warning. Otherwise, I will be totally lost when some glitch happens. I come under the technologically-challenged category. Voting up and useful!
Hello HotelTravel! Thanks for dropping by, reading and commenting. I am glad you are not experiencing problems! It can be such a pain when it happens.
I got Google chrome and windows 7 and IT never happens to me :P
Hello RoyalWhiskers! I would presume it is like 50 percent that are effected. This is with Windows 7, 64-bit.
I'm sorry to hear that you're having this issue. I have Chrome on my Windows 7 machine and have experienced no problems with it. Voting this Up and Interesting.
Hello Alocsin. I am glad to hear that you are one of those who are not having the problems. Since writing this hub I have experienced the problem one more time, two crashes in a row. It is very hard to tell when it will happen and what the cause is. I have continued my research and find it is still wide spread with other users and no solution has been found as of yet. Thanks for stopping by, reading, commenting and voting up~
I have posted a video update that may be the solution to this problem. I have implemented the rather simple fix and now time will tell if it has worked. As mentioned the crashes are not daily or any given time... so I will just browse away and see if the problem has been resolved.
I have used Google since day one, about 10 years ago, and Chrome since it became available.I have Windows 7 64 bit and it started crashing the computer about 60 days ago.I since am trying IE9 and have had no crashes for a week. I wonder whether Microsoft added something to patches or if an add on is causing the issue. I am a retired MCSE and CNE, so I am suspicious of the sudden problem after many years using Chrome.
The conflict seems to be compatibility issues between Chrome and Windows 7 64-bit. My problem was going on as soon as Dell sent me a replacement laptop that had the Windows 7 64 bit on it versus what I had previously. My previous laptop was Vista with no problems or conflicts with Chrome. I think it may be an ad on or something that creates the flash crash. Not sure however. The fix mentioned here has helped me. Every so often I get the crash but not as it was previously. However, I am still contemplating reverting back to Firefox or IE. I would have done so already if I could figure out out to transfer my bookmarks to either one. The instructions for Firefox did not work at all that they offer on their site.
I too have been revisited by the problem. For me it seems to happen everytime MS forces a Windows update on my computer. I have turned off every single type of automatic operating system and application update that I can, but periodically Windows 7 STILL pushes through a Definition update of Windows Defender. I cannot figure out how to obliterate all traces of Defender so that my computer can stay stable for any length of time.
Short version: I dread the day that I bought a new computer with Windows 7 64 bit. It has been the worst experience that I have EVER with any computer!!
Hello Helena. I understand the frustration without a doubt. My original laptop was from Dell and ordered with Windows Vista Premium on it. I was happy. However, while under warranty, the laptop developed some issues that Dell could not troubleshoot, so they replaced the laptop. The replacement came with Windows 7 64-bit. I would not have purchased it myself. I was content with Vista.
Some of the issues certainly could be related to the MS updates as you mention. Hopefully, everything will mellow out soon and work together harmoniously!
after reading helena farmer's comment above, i have had my "google crashing" epiphany... my crashes also seem to occur around (usually before) a windows update and yes, it is a forced one at that. being computer challenged, i didnt even know you could disable the updates! my bigger concern is recovering tabs that were open at the time of the crash. to do this i have to wait for the computer to restart, windows to install updates, and then must re-open google chrome on taskbar (not launch new chrome browser) so i can select new tab and then hit "recently closed tab" button at bottom right of screen. i am sure you know of other options to do this (recover open tabs, that is) but i do not. if you launch new chrome browser you cannot use "recently closed" option? i am not sure if i am correct in these procedures, but it was through trial and error that i came to this solution, if you could call it that! I apologize for the informal punctuation but i am also a challenged typist as well! ha! also, just curious... why is a cold restart bad for your computer as you mentioned above? thanx for the post and i hope that helena's and my experiences can shed some light to others. btw, my fourteen year old nephew who is quite the gamer and techie, swears by firefox so i will begin using that as well.
Hello Mike! When I restart Chrome, I "normally" get the automatic "restore tabs" option, but not always. Thanks for the insight for those other times. :)
From my understanding, a cold start disrupts the Windows files hence the BSOD that you get at times, blue screen of death. Basically that is when you are asked if you would like Windows to fix any errors that were created by the cold start. I, with certification in CompTIA and all, would advise that you only cold start when you have no other option. With Chrome errors, which seem to escalate even more as time goes by, cold starts are "usually" the only option as everything will lock up.
The ONLY reason I have not shifted back to Firefox is because I have yet to find a way to actually import my Chrome bookmarks to Chrome or even another browser. I see the options but when I try, nothing happens. I do believe that Chrome is blocking the import in some manner hoping to keep us locked into Chrome.
My experience with the MANY glitches and problems with Chrome is that Google Chrome forums staff and tech support could care less and rarely even address the problem and when they do, it is not a "simple" solution. You are told to actually do some in depth programming to resolve the issue. Totally unacceptable by me.

I am an avid user of Google Chrome, in Windows 7 64bit. It is the only browser I will use in my system. I have tried FireFox, as well as Flock, Safari, IE, and some very unknown browsers, all of which have crashed repeatedly in my system with normal use. Chrome, by contrast, has rarely crashed on me. I use it daily, often with more than one Chrome Browser open at a time, and use multiple plug-ins and extensions for all of my online worldly habits and escapades.
I run CCleaner at minimum once a week, as well as Defraggler, and wonder if this may be the difference. It may be that I am just lucky, I'm not certain. However, I know I could not live in the internet age right now on my Windows 7 PC without Chrome to browse my world.
I hope they find a resolution for you soon. Voted Up + Interesting
